Frequently Asked Questions: Authors
Can I submit my manuscript by mail or email?
No, all manuscripts must be submitted electronically to the Decision Sciences Journalof Innovative Education through the secure online system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/dsjie.
In the past, Decision Sciences has required a $25 nonrefundable submission fee for members and $50 for nonmembers. However, the author information does notmention the submission fee. Is it still a requirement?
No, beginning January 1, 2005, authors no longer are required to submit a nonrefundable submission fee.
Should I create a new User Profile for every submission?
No. You should create a new User Profile only with your first submission. Do not create a new User Profile if you think you could already be in the DSJIE system. Instead, enter the Author Center to update your profile if necessary.
If I am an Associate Editor or member of the Editorial Review Board do I need to create a User Profile before submitting a manuscript?
No. When you joined the DSJIE Editorial Team, you were asked to set up a profile that provides you access to the Author Center as well as the Center appropriate to you (Editor Center or Reviewer Center). This profile includes identifying information about you as well as the key word review/evaluation areas you consider your expertise. This means it is unnecessary to create a separate profile. You may update your profile from any Center to which you have access (Author Center, Reviewer Center, and/or Editor Center). If you wish to update your profile now, enter the Author Center to do so. Any paper submitted by an AE will be provided to another AE for processing.
How can I obtain information on the status of my manuscript under review?
DSJIE is committed to providing authors with up-to-date information about the status of their manuscripts. Authors may securely access information on the status of their manuscripts under review from the manuscript central system.
How do I revise a manuscript?
To revise your manuscript, log into http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/dsjie and enter your Author Center, where you will find your manuscript title listed under "Manuscripts with Decisions." Under "Actions," click on "Create a Revision." Your manuscript number has been appended to denote a revision.
You will be unable to make your revisions on the originally submitted version of the manuscript. Instead, please revise your manuscript using a word processing program and save it on your computer. Once the revised manuscript is prepared, you can upload it and submit it through your Author Center.
When submitting your revised manuscript, please respond to the comments made by the reviewers in the space provided and document any changes you make to the original manuscript. In order to expedite the processing of the revised manuscript, please be as specific as possible in your response to the reviewers.
IMPORTANT: Your original files are available to you when you upload your revised manuscript. Please delete any redundant files before completing the submission.
May I submit a manuscript to DSJIE that is under consideration by another publication?
No. DSJIE’s Manuscript Policies specifically state that authors must certify that “none of the contents of their manuscript has been copyrighted, published, or accepted for publication by another journal, or is under review by another journal.”
May I submit a manuscript to DSJIE that has been or will be published in conference proceedings?
If a conference paper has been or will be published in proceedings, it generally cannot be
submitted to DSJIE, because it is already considered to be published. Conference proceedings represent an official publication outlet, particularly if published in electronic form on the web.
There is one exception to the DSJIE’s rule. Sometimes conference papers are restricted in length (e.g., those for the Decision Sciences Institute Annual Meeting Proceedings are limited to 25 pages or only an abstract was published). If the authors substantially extend the paper, then it is a new paper, and can be considered for DSJIE. If you submit such a paper to DSJIE, please include in your Cover letter that the paper is an extension of one published in proceedings (indicate the conference and the year). Also upload a copy of the paper published in the proceedings to manuscript central, so the Editor can immediately consider whether the extension made for the DSJIE submission is adequate.
May I submit a manuscript if I was a finalist of the DSI Instructional Innovation Award Competition?
We strongly encourage instructional innovation finalists to publish articles in both Decision Line and DSJIE. For Decision Line, they can usually send a copy of their submission as is, or perhaps shorten it a bit. For DSJIE, submission requires a substantial amount of additional work so that the article fits into one of the categories: empirical research article, case study research article, conceptual/theoretical article, and/or teaching brief. The authors are encouraged to submit the revised paper to the manuscript central system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/dsjie. The article will go through the review process and there is no guarantee that it will be ultimately accepted. So it makes sense to publish first in Decision Line and have a guaranteed way to show off their work. At the same time, the author(s) are encouraged to submit a revised version of their work to DSJIE so it can be considered for publication."
What kinds of references are needed for my article?
References are an important indication to reviewers that you had done an adequate job of literature search before submitting the article. If appropriate, please reference articles published in earlier issues of DSJIE.
May I submit a manuscript if it is a teaching case?
The DSJIE does not publish case studies designed for classroom use.
